About Zucco Castle

Many guests are curious about the history behind our camping retreat, and we love sharing the story of this place with visitors.

A bit of story..

The main structure you see today, with its castle-like facade and iconic tower, dates back to the 1800s. Originally, it was a church, but over time, it was transformed with the addition of the tower, giving it the appearance of a small fortress.

The surrounding walls encircle the hill and are even older, dating back to the early 1600s. These walls, with cannon holes, suggest that the area once served as a control post during times of war, standing guard over the valley below.

In more recent history, the site took on a different role. From the late 1970s, it became a popular restaurant, well-known in the area, and remained a beloved gathering spot until 2008. After the restaurant closed, the place was left vacant for nearly a decade.

In 2017 we decided to breathe new life into it, moving here and restoring the living areas. Since then, we have worked to turn it into the peaceful spot you see today.

Finally, in late 2024, we begin a new chapter about a garden-sharing / camping retreat…

The surroundings

Not far away (less than 4 Km), there’s the historic village of Cividale del Friuli, a Lombard village and UNESCO World Heritage site, which we highly recommend visiting!

The Slovenian border is also very close: you can reach Kobarid in just 30 minutes and Bovec in about 45 minutes.

If you love the sea, Grado, Lignano, and Bibione are beautiful seaside locations on the Adriatic Sea, each less than an hour away.
